COVID-19 (coronavirus)

  • COVID-19 is caused by a highly contagious virus that affects the respiratory system. It can cause mild to serious illness, and even death.
  • Everyone is at risk of infection but some people are at higher risk of becoming seriously ill with COVID-19, including:
    • older people
    • pregnant women
    • people with other health conditions (e.g. lung disease, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, kidney failure, neurologic conditions or cancer)
    • people who are immunocompromised due to a health condition or medications/treatments.
    • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (especially those that are older or with other risk factors)
    • some people living with a disability
    • people who are not up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations.

You should go to an emergency department (ED) if your symptoms are severe, or if you have a serious or life-threatening condition. Call Triple Zero (000) for an ambulance. Let the operator and hospital know prior to arrival if you have COVID-19 so they know to treat you safely.
