Our community

Improving the experiences of our patients, their families and staff

Our community

Consumer engagement is the process where organisations actively work and partner with consumers, carers and the community to design, plan and evaluate health care services.

Engagement occurs at different levels across Rockingham Peel Group (RkPG) and South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) (external site), including:

  • engaging with consumers to provide feedback and assist in planning related to a specific unit or service
  • seeking consumers and the community participation and input into how services are delivered, evaluated and improved.

'Put it to the People' engagement platform

SMHS values hearing the diverse experiences and insights of our patients, families, carers and community.

Our easy-to-use online community engagement platform – Put it to the People – gives our consumers and community a voice in how SMHS delivers health care.

Volunteering

The important and valuable contributions our volunteers make across RkPG are vital to improving the experiences of our patients, their families and our staff.

Our volunteer network includes more than 200 community members who freely give their time to support programs and facilities across Rockingham General and Murray District hospitals.

If you are looking to use your skills, help your local community and meet new people, a variety of volunteering activities are available, including:

  • providing social support to vulnerable patients, including isolated or elderly patients in rehabilitation, and mental health patients
  • working front-of-house or behind-the-scenes in Elanora’s Café or Gift Shop at Rockingham General Hospital
  • greeting and directing patients and visitors around the hospital
  • driving patients on our bus to and from medical appointments for the Volunteer Transport team
  • entertaining children in the paediatric ward as part of Radio Lollipop
  • participating as a consumer representative on the Consumer Advisory Council (CAC).

All volunteers are required to undergo checks (this may include police and/or Working with Children checks) and are provided with training.
