Emergency ambulance fees for seniors and pensioners
- Western Australians over 65, and in receipt of an Australian Government pension, are entitled to free emergency ambulance services.
- Western Australians over 65, who do not receive an Australian Government pension, are entitled to a 50 per cent discount off the cost of emergency ambulance services.
- WA residents under 65 who hold a valid Pension Concession Entitlement are partially subsidised, the patient will pay 50 per cent of the fee.
The WA emergency ambulance service is delivered by St John WA. Ambulance Services are partially subsidised by the State, however there is a component of the fees that are required to be paid by the user for the of care they receive. St John WA’s fees (external site) are set in agreement with the Department of Health.
WA residents over the age of 65, and those who hold a valid Pension Concession Entitlement, are entitled to state-subsidised ambulance services when the service is medically necessary.

Private health insurers offer ambulance cover (including ambulance-only policies), please contact them directly if you would like to arrange cover for the patient portion of the user fees.
Assistance may also be available for patients who are veterans, victims of crime, or involved in accidents at work or in a motor vehicle.

Am I entitled to free ambulance transport as an older Western Australian?
For the purposes of using ambulance services, if you are over 65 years of age and permanently reside in Western Australia, you are considered either a senior citizen or an aged pensioner, and may be entitled to certain free or discounted ambulance services.
