Volunteer brightening patients’ days at Rockingham General Hospital
Mary found her 'something for everyone' volunteering stint at Rockingham General Hospital by volunteering in both the gift shop and as a patient transfer van driver.
Commencing just prior to the pandemic, she felt that as she was retired, she had more to give.
“It was time for me to get out of the house and give back to society,” Mary said.
In her capacity working in the gift shop, she loves that she can brighten someone’s day.
“The best thing about working in the gift shop is that I can lend an ear to someone who might be going through a rough time or help them pick a little gift that might make them smile,” Mary said.
She shared a similar sentiment about working as a patient transfer driver, where she ferries patient who may have difficulty getting to and from the hospital for appointments or when they are discharged from hospital.
“It’s very rewarding to know I am helping people get to the care they need,” Mary continued.
“It’s great to meet new people and hear their stories.”
National Volunteer Week runs from 20 – 26 May and this year’s theme is ‘Something for Everyone’. Across the week, we are showcasing and celebrating all our dedicated volunteers and their varied roles and passions.
