Medical Imaging

Medical Imaging is a specialty that uses x-rays and ultrasound for the purpose of medical diagnosis.

The Medical Imaging department at RGH provides a full range of diagnostic and interventional services to patients referred from the Hospital’s Emergency Department, Wards and Outpatient Clinics.

We do accept referrals from general practitioners and private medical consultants.

Our department is accredited by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) (external site) and the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) (external site).

We offer a variety of services including:

  • general radiography including OPGs
  • computed tomography (CT) scanning
  • ultrasound
  • fluoroscopy.

We do not offer:

  • MRI
  • bone densitometry
  • nuclear medicine studies.

All patients require a referral to get access to the medical imaging service. Referrals are accepted from:

  • medical practitioners (public and private)
  • podiatrists
  • physiotherapists
  • chiropractors
  • dentists
  • hospital-based nurse practitioners.

Appointments are required for all special procedures including ultrasound, CT and fluoroscopy. No appointment is required for plain x-rays.

For plain x-rays, your images can be made available after examination and we will fax the report once it’s available. Special procedures take longer to report and normally the report is available the within two working days. If the case is urgent, the radiologist will liaise directly with your doctor.
