Hands-on echo training a first for WA

Junior doctors at Rockingham General Hospital (RGH) now have access to a unique hands-on echocardiography training program, the first of its kind in Western Australia.
Led by Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Head of Department Dr Ravikiran Sonawane, the program was launched in partnership with Monash University and sonographers from Advara HeartCare in Perth.
Currently, RGH is one of just 6 sites across Australia to offer the structured program, which covers both basic and advanced echocardiography, giving junior doctors valuable practical experience alongside experienced sonographers.
With support from the RGH Auxiliary, junior doctors who complete the course on time have their course fees reimbursed, removing financial barriers and making it easier for them to get involved.
ICU consultants Dr Sonawane and Dr Prasad Bheemasenachar provide supervision and mentorship throughout the program, helping junior doctors build confidence and clinical skills.
“We want to give our junior doctors the chance to learn and grow in a supportive environment,” said Ravikiran.
“This training sets them up with practical skills they’ll use throughout their careers and helps position our hospital as a top choice for medical training.
“The ICU team is proud to support any initiatives that invest in our future workforce.”
