Delivering online maternity physiotherapy resources a labour of love

As Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) Senior Physiotherapist Lara Diepeveen’s own pregnancy nears her due date, she is celebrating the delivery of another labour of love – a suite of online physiotherapy resources to support maternity patients during and after pregnancy.

In collaboration with Lara and other senior physiotherapists, 20 pages of specialised maternity physiotherapy content is now live on the hospital website.

“Physiotherapy plays an important role in supporting how a woman’s body manages pregnancy and her recovery,” Lara said.

“In the past, we provided this advice to consumers in two large booklets – one for during pregnancy and one for after giving birth.

“Our consumers are technically savvy, so transforming printed resources into accessible online content was an obvious win for our consumers.

“In addition, the move to telehealth consultations due to the COVID-19 pandemic identified that videos showing women how to do stretches, exercises and other self-care activities would enhance their patient experience.”

The physiotherapists and SMHS Corporate Communications worked with Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Group’s Medical Illustrations Department to produce the videos.

“We really valued the support of the medical illustrations and communications teams in producing these videos,” Lara said.

“Their advice included keeping the videos short to retain our consumers’ attention and including captions, so they are accessible to people living with disability.

“Our consumers can now access information about safe and proven physiotherapy techniques throughout pregnancy and even after their baby is born at the touch of button at a time convenient to them.

“Another benefit is we can update the content as new research is translated into everyday care, rather than waiting for the next print run.”

SMHS Corporate Communications Manager Jodie Pudney said this was another example of how quality online content could better meet the needs of our consumers, many of whom have immediate access to smart devices.

“Moving consumer content online is important to improving the patient journey while also being a financial and environmentally sustainable option,” Jodie said.
