South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) is celebrating wins by two of our outstanding nurses at the 2018 WA Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards on Saturday night.

Congratulations to Mandy Major from Rockingham General Hospital Barbara O’Callaghan from Fiona Stanley Hospital on being recognised at these prestigious awards.

Mandy, who won the Excellence in Enrolled Nursing category for her role as an Advanced Skilled Enrolled Nurse in Mental Health, said she felt extremely honoured to be recognised.

“My success is due to all the wonderful professionals I have worked with over the years who have mentored me and given me the skills to perform to the best of my ability,” she said.

“I am truly grateful for all the support from the executive and management teams at Rockingham Peel Group.”

Barbara took out the Excellence in Registered Nursing category for her work as Clinical Nurse Consultant in Oncology and was surprised at her win.

“I feel very privileged to have been acknowledged in such a wonderful way and really wasn’t expecting to win, knowing there are so many wonderful nurses out there all doing a great job.

“For me the highlight was having my 10 year old daughter there and for her to see me win, it shows we can all do whatever we set our mind to as long as we give it our best.”

SMHS Chief Executive Paul Forden said both Mandy and Barbara exemplified the care and dedication our nurses and midwives bring to their work every day.

“To be recognised in this way is a huge achievement and we congratulate them on their win and thank them for their dedication and commitment their patients and their contribution to our health service,” he said.

A very special mention to Suki Loe, SMHS Nurse Director of Informatics, who was a finalist in Excellence in Leadership category.
