When Ms Joanne Hughes first began her career as a nurse she was discouraged from working with elderly and frail patients.

Years later, Joanne’s passion for aged care and commitment to best practice has not gone unnoticed.

Joanne was recently presented the Chief Executive’s Commitment to Excellence Award at the inaugural South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) Excellence Awards, which recognises staff of the health service who demonstrate excellence each and every day.

“It is an absolute delight to have peer recognition. It is somewhat humbling to receive this recognition when I work alongside so many dedicated and excellent staff,” Joanne said.

As the Nurse Unit Manager for the Aged Care Rehabilitation Unit (ACRU) at Rockingham General Hospital, Joanne is a catalyst for change and the main driver of multiple safety and quality initiatives across the ACRU.

“It is with thanks to our senior leaders, executive teams and board members for taking the time and energy to support innovation across the hospital.” Joanne said.

SMHS Chief Executive Paul Forden said Joanne embodiment of the health service’s values and consistently going above and beyond were just two of the reasons she was received this award.

“I highly commend Joanne’s work on numerous quality improvement projects, including the innovating #ditchthepyjamas campaign and reducing patient falls in the unit,” Mr Forden said.

“It is so warming to hear Joanne’s staff praise her dynamic, collaborative and fair leadership style, which is why she was deserving of this award.”
