A partnership which has improved the detection, early intervention and recovery for clients suffering from psychosis is a finalist in the 2018 WA Health Excellence Awards.

Run by the Rockingham Peel Group (RkPG) Mental Health Service in partnership with Ruah Community Services, the Early Episode Psychosis (EEP) program provides evidence-based treatment for clients experiencing an early episode of psychosis.

The EEP program quickly identifies when a person has had a psychotic episode, then provides them with support including a management plan tailored to successfully treat early psychotic illness.

Mental Health Service Co-Director and project lead Dr Gordon Shymko said for the public mental health system to be sustainable, it must be innovative in its use of policy and reform.

“Strategic partnerships are vital to enhance this process, focussing on how to make the best use of resources to improve the delivery of high quality and effective services,” Dr Shymko said.

The partnership between RkPG Mental Health Service and Ruah Community Services was formed back in 1996 to provide expertise in the management of psychosis in response to an increase in demand in the community. Evidence indicates that the longer psychotic disorders are left untreated, the worse the outcome for the sufferer and their family.

“More than 20-years strong, this unique partnership continues to assist people in our community to recover from psychosis, allowing them to re-establish meaningful and productive lives,” Dr Shymko said.

The EEP project is a finalist within the ‘Managing resources efficiently and effectively’ category. Winners will be announced at a gala dinner on 8 November 2018.

Congratulations to the RAPID emergency C-section project team at Rockingham General Hospital, who are also finalists in this year’s WA Health Excellence Awards.
