The Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre (MARC) has launched a refreshed menu as part of the healthy café project.

The project has been a collaboration with South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) – Health Promotion, the City of Mandurah, WA School Canteen Association and LiveLighter, and is supported by a Healthway grant.

Mandurah is the first WA local government recreation centre to take part in the new Fuel to Go & Play program, offering 43 per cent healthy green choices across their café menu.

Fuel to Go & Play is a WA School Canteen Association program that uses a ‘traffic light system’ of rating food and drinks as green, amber or red, based on their nutritional value.

SMHS Health Promotion Officer Corinne Hunt said creating healthier environments which provide healthy food and drink choices were vital for reducing the high rates of overweight and obesity among the Western Australian (WA) community.

“Given obesity has overtaken tobacco as the leading contributor for serious illness in WA, it’s never been more important to provide kids with nutritious and appealing options that will inspire them to continue making healthy choices into adulthood,” Corinne said.

“Mandurah residents can access seasonal fruit, Vietnamese salad shakers, delicious homemade muffins and enjoy an ever-changing fresh display of food.”

Other project strategies include healthy food parent education sessions targeting families with children, healthy recipe cards and LiveLighter wall decals, digital media and signage that will replace the current junk food signage.

A video of the centre showcases these positive achievements to other local government associations looking to promote healthy eating in community venues.
