It may have been years in the making but the young people and their families visiting Rockingham General Hospital’s (RGH) paediatric unit now have a colourful play area just for them.

The play area was recently opened by former patient Madison Halford who was excited to come back and be the first to use the dragonfly slide, which is the centrepiece of the area.

Paediatric Nurse Unit Manager Vicki Filby coordinated the transformation of the courtyard to create a little slice of paradise with parents also in mind.

“The space is designed to be bright and engaging for parents and siblings to get some air, away from the confines of the ward,” Vicki said.

“It is not intended to be a full playground, more a pleasant distraction for families as our patients are discharged home as soon as they are well enough.”

The play space has a custom dragonfly slide, ride-on trikes, game panels and Lego-inspired wall transfers to add colour.

“It is great to see the area being used after so many planning meetings, approvals, fundraising efforts and hard work,” Vicki said.

“The Friends of RGH volunteers and the Auxiliary volunteers made significant donations to this project, without which none of this would have been possible.

“Their love and care for this hospital, and its staff and patients, is extremely admirable.

“Additions such as these demonstrate that the delivery of ‘care’ is not only meant in the clinical sense. Good care also means creating environments where patients and their families feel comfortable, relaxed and able to recover.”
