To mark Occupational Therapy Week (21-27 October), let’s take a closer look at the allied health team helping our patients in their recovery.

Rockingham Peel Group’s Occupational Therapy (OT) team provides services to areas including medical, emergency, rehabilitation, mental health, outpatients, surgical and intensive care.

The team works with patients of all abilities and ages to maximise their function despite their illness or injury.

Occupational therapists assess the patient’s needs and wants to develop an individualised therapy program to enable them to achieve their goals. A program includes the use of therapeutic activities, such as teaching the patient different ways to complete tasks with a new injury or illness, and/or equipment, such as installing shower chairs or rails in their home.

“The most rewarding part of the job is when someone is able to reach a point of independence where there no longer need our input. That’s when you know you have been successful,” said Occupational Therapist Amy Clissa.

The RkPG OT team is involved in a number of projects aimed at improving patient care, including the Ditch the Pyjamas campaign in the Aged Care Rehabilitation Unit.

Aged Care Rehabilitation Unit Occupational Therapist Donna McLeod said the campaign aimed to get patients out of bed and dressed in day clothes for a portion of their day.

“Getting patients back into their normal routines is a great step on the road to recovery after injury or illness,” Donna said.
